I can remember my first ICU rotation as a resident. It was great--sick patients, lots of procedures, and a real challenge. It was also intimidating, especially when it came to the ventilator. I had a basic understanding of mechanical ventilation, but I wanted to learn more. Unfortunately, the books and articles that I found were not what I needed.

The ones that I read had long chapters on the pathophysiology of respiratory failure, the mechanics of gas exchange, and the evidence supporting different modes. What I needed was a guidebook--something that would tell me how to set the ventilator up, explain why, and help me troubleshoot a tough situation. It had to fit in my jacket pocket. It had to be written in a way that made sense. Most importantly, the ventilator book online pdf download, I had to be able to read it at 2 a.

Now, I teach Critical Care Medicine. The residents and medical students that I work with need the same thing I did--a way to understand mechanical ventilation while being responsible for the care of sick, sick patients. This is available for free on the website. There are also chapters on high frequency oscillatory ventilation and airway pressure release ventilation, as well as a chapter on taking care of the patient with prolonged respiratory failure.

Each chapter is concise and can be read in minutes. Appendix of Useful Knowledge--equations and formulas that are useful for attending rounds, pimping, and presentations. While you obviously still need the hands on, this book will give you all the tools you need to manage the vast majority of vent cases. Format: Paperback Verified Purchase. I bought the use version of this, and it is just as good as a new one.

I really like the material and how this book is laid out. I am a CCT medic, the ventilator book online pdf download, and have found this book helpful.

As for the blank pages as some have said, you are getting all the pages, but when a chapter end, they start the next chapter on an entire new sheet, not the backside of the previous, the ventilator book online pdf download, so you are not actually missing any materail as someone said.

I recommend this book. Purchased this for my husband on his birthday - we are both internal medicine residents and he is planning on pursuing a career in critical care medicine, and this book was recommended by a colleague. It is a kitschy, fun read never thought this was possible for something as the ventilator book online pdf download as changing vent settings - would be a great start for an intern, probably more that you would need to know.

Reviews setting changes in a fun, memorable way. I purchased this at the recommendation of Scott Weingart from Emcrit, but while reading it in my office, several other providers have commented on how it's a classic of basic ventilator mastery.

I had a fair understanding of how to manage vents before reading this, but this explained things in a much better way than I'd learned before and is a very practical guide to understanding and managing vents.

Good book and information except that my copy is missing a few pages. Some pages printed blank and cut off the previous sentences or paragraphs, the ventilator book online pdf download. If I had the full book like what I paid for and not this copy with missprinted pages it would be 5 stars. Through my residency the ventilator book online pdf download far I had been reading about ventilator management from so many different source that all the information gets mangled.

You are reading the same stuff from different books and thus you fail to develop a mental picture. It is always good to have the ventilator book online pdf download single basic source. This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to know the basics and more for ventilator management.

I am reading it on my Note 3 which has a big enough screen size to read books. I am reading it on the go when I have time. It is short enough and the language is simple enough for it to be read and applied quickly.

It gives just the required bit of knowledge to apply to your patients which is I think all you need. Not extensive but all a resident would need and also if you are planning for a career as a Hospitalist who would have to do Vent Management. Read this one or twice and that should set you up. I would recommend this for Residents and Hospitalists and possibly critical care fellows as a great starter book.

A lot of text books and material on mechanical ventilation are a waste of time and don't emphasize quick practical things needed in the ICU. The ventilator book is excellent! It has helped me manage my ICU patients on ventilator with confidence. I am very grateful to William Owens, the author of this book. I wish more physicians will think like him and write more practically applicable book.

If you need a great intro to ventilators, this book is a good choice. Concise, easy to read, with good information. Can easily read through in an hour or two casually reading. I've been waiting for this book for my whole career! I'm an anaesthetist and know how to ventilate people safely for pretty much any surgery. I've always found icu ventilation to be far more complex and frankly, somewhat over my head. I'm a simple soul and like to have stuff explained as such. This book does exactly that. It makes sense and tells me what I need to know. It doesn't blind one with science and for this, I'm eternally grateful.
