No, you can only play the remastered version on the XBox (the digital download version from XBLA), or the XBox One (via the Rare Replay collection). You can't currently emulate either machine, of course, so emulation is not an option. As R3Member says, Microsoft currently have plans to make some /XBox One games playable on the PC. GoldenEye and Perfect Dark are two of my favourite ever games, largely because of their built-in focus on record times. When I first got the games in the early s, I looked up all the information I could about strategies. However I've only ever been a lurker at The Elite website itself, and generally only followed the main news page: I never registered for the forums, and I didn't even register to contribute my times until around when they switched from scraping Geocities pages to that nice user-friendly form submission system.

I have a grand total of zero points across both games lol. However as much as I loved PD, it had one drawback that became more and more significant as time went on: that framerate! I wouldn't go so far as to say it made it unplayable, but it was often very frustrating in levels like Crash Site.

Even though I didn't yet have an Xbox at the time, I devoured every source I could - including the Elite forums - to compile this fairly comprehensive list of changes from the N64 version.

Then I got a and the game and never went back to update that article I've always found that the angle required for the speed gain feels slightly inconsistent, and it's unreliable to hit it on every occasion it's needed within a level.

Also it does a weird thing that the N64 version never did, where you can go even faster if you run for a while in one direction, even if just running directly forwards.

Despite these changes, I'd assumed that the game would be embraced by the Elite, maybe even becoming a third title perfect dark remastered pc download the leaderboards, perfect dark remastered pc download.

But that didn't happen. The game didn't even get its own dedicated folder in the forums, instead being shunted to a few threads in the "Other games" section. So my question is: why isn't the remaster more prominent among the Elite?

I would have thought that the better framerate alone would have been enough to get it more attention. Was it just the changes to speed strafing controls that they objected to? Maybe their objection is that the changes to format and controls mean it it should be treated as a completely unrelated game, perfect dark remastered pc download, outside the community's remit - but surely the fundamental, core appeal of the game as a time attacking FPS is the same as it was on N64? It really does feel like a completely different game to play.

Literally none of the skills that you acquire from playing the N64 version translate to the Xbox. It would be the same as asking a runner from 1 game why they don't speedrun a different game as well. Usually runners have 1 game they are very good at. Goldeneye and perfect dark play very similar so usually people are good at both. IMO the controls are horrible on the new PD. Also the lower frame rate on the N64 is actually part of the personality of it. The game shares the same level design and name, but it's a completely different game for all intents and purposes.

It's less popular, the controls are worse, and the high frame rate makes it feel fake. I don't know perfect dark remastered pc download a single person who ran the N64 version first, and then played the XBOX version and thought it felt better. Do you think it would have been more popular among the community if they'd improved the aiming sensitivity and included an option to use XYAB for movement and left stick for aiming?

I can appreciate how control systems and muscle memory play a big part in a game's appeal - it's why I still find it more fun to play FPSs with control pad even though keyboard and mouse is objectively quicker and more accurate for aiming. So I can't understand why you'd say "literally none of the skills that you acquire" translate - things like route planning, running line accuracy, ammo management, and luck with boosts all still apply, despite the changes to the control system.

Last time I looked at the Xbox Live Leaderboards, I recognised a few Elite members' names near the top - so clearly the skill does translate across even if those players gave up on the version immediately after getting the game and setting those records. I can't agree on the low framerate being a part of the appeal and personality; for me if lag delays the player's recognition of enemy motion, and poor framerate eats inputs, perfect dark remastered pc download, that's something that it's always beneficial to lose, even if players have spent years learning to work around those limitations.

Whereas lookdown is a workaround used to take advantage of something that is definitely a flaw in the hardware limitations, so I would have thought that even speedrunners who've got used to needing it would praise the fact it's no longer needed. To your last point, lookdown isn't needed in the original PD to reduce lag - GE players are just so used to it they do it by default. To that end, boost luck isn't really a PD thing either. And sure, game knowledge may translate from version to version, perfect dark remastered pc download, but the muscle memory doesn't.

I think you have to be decent at either game to make the claims perfect dark remastered pc download making, which you admit you aren't. Isn't it needed? I always used to look down on levels like Villa Agent and Infiltration Agent that were more focused on long runs. Didn't realise it was unnecessary! Oh yeah, I freely admit that although I certainly spent more time and effort on trying to set my own PRs than the vast majority of people who ever played GE and PD, I was far from "decent" by Elite standards.

And the framerate was a big part of why I struggled so much with certain PD levels, and a major reason why I think that Perfect Dark's Perfect Agent difficulty is much higher than GoldenEye's 00 Agent. I often died in levels like Crash Site PA and Attack Ship PA because the framerate made it hard to judge the exact moment the auto-aim would put the crosshair over an enemy guard, something that can be seen instantaneously in the version.

You can not agree with me all you want about other points, but your opinion completely conflicts with reality, perfect dark remastered pc download. It's not just PD where dealing with a low frame rate adds to the personality and prestige of the run.

The exact same thing applies to Mario VC and emulator runs are a joke compared to the real deal I suppose Perfect dark remastered pc download didn't realise that speedrunners must be one of very few classes of gamer who would actually praise framerate issues.

I can understand why being able to cope with such limitations might be a sign or skill, but I just can't understand why any player would find it more fun, perfect dark remastered pc download.

The speedrunning community on one side vs Digital Foundry on the other - fight! So thanks, perfect dark remastered pc download. If I did, I'd be registering there just to ask this one question; as I say, I've only ever lurked there rather than really participated in the community. My times are all zero points and my N64 died a few years ago, so I don't think I'd be contributing much!

Also, I thought posting it here might get a response not just from any Eliters who visit here, but also a wider range of speedrunners - maybe some examples from other communities that rejected remasters and remakes?

Whitegoose sometimes comments here, wouldn't be surprised if he showed up and gave a pretty good answer soon. No real reason to learn how to play with another kind of controller when the original PD looks and feels just fine to people that are already used to running GE.

I haven't been actively involved in the elite community for over a decade, but I'm guessing the main answer is that most people there didn't care much about the framerate, negating what you consider to perfect dark remastered pc download the biggest benefit.

I didn't really speedrun PD and so I can't comment on speedrun tech for it, but for Perfect dark remastered pc download the framerate was responsible for the benefits of lookdown and door warps which have been considered basic tech since before I joined the scene.

If there are similar framerate-dependent elements for PD I can understand why that might ruin the feel of the game for people accustomed to the original. As an alternate answer: you mentioned the Other Games section, but the other games which did get their own section mainly Timesplitters games have been far less active than the main games, and maybe people didn't feel it was worth it.

Alternate alternate answer: Maybe a lot of people at TE didn't have a ? I didn't, but I don't know about the rest of the community. All of the things you're perfect dark remastered pc download make it sound like a totally separate game in terms of speedrunning. But since it's still Perfect dark remastered pc download Dark it would add a lot of confusion to officially support it.

Frankly though, the Elite are old school. Change comes very slowly there, and I doubt any of the old guard would be interested in grinding on a new platform. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy.
